Feature Films

Compared to other sports there doesn't seem to be many films about Soccer, this is a full list of the ones I could find:

Kicking and Screaming (G)(2005)

Possibly the movie where soccer really achieves mainstream US media status, although it's still about kids teams and their coaches rather than a professional team. Will Ferrell stars as Phil Weston, an adult who still feels like a kid when his dad Buck (Robert Duvall) is around. Buck coaches in the local kids' soccer league, and as the movie opens, he trades his grandson -- his own grandson -- because the kid is no good. That makes Phil mad: He was always told he was a loser, and now his own kid is getting the same treatment from Buck. So Phil decides to become a coach himself. But he's just as obsessed with winning as his dad. You can probably guess the rest of the plot...

Bend it like Beckham (2002) (PG-13)

Probably the best film on this list, and a big sleeper hit from England in 2003. "Bend it" has been compared to "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", it finds a lot of good hearted humour in the generation & culture gap experienced by immigrant families as their children grow up in a western culture. In this case the subject is an Indian family in London rather than a Greek family in Chicago, and their daughter's big rebellion is wanting to play soccer rather than marrying outside the culture.
For my money "Bend it" is much funnier than "Greek Wedding", and will appeal to an audience of older children, teenagers and adults. The PG-13 rating is because of some realistic scenes of teenagers swearing profusely and "making out".
For anyone confused by the title "Bend it" refers to making a soccer ball serve in flight, like a baseball pitch. "Beckham" refers to David Beckham, a professional soccer player, famous for scoring goals by "bending the ball".

Soccer Dog: The Movie (1999) (PG)

If you liked "Air Bud" and you like Soccer then ... From the movie web site:
A heart-warming comedy about the friendship between the new kid in town and a soccer-playing dog on the lam from the dog-catcher. It's up to these two underdogs to win the PeeWee Soccer League championship game

The Big Green (G)(~1990)

Basically this is the same Disney movie you've seen as "The Mighty Ducks" or "The Bad News Bears" but with a soccer team instead of a Hockey or Baseball team.
When a small school in a depressed American town gets an exchange teacher from England they start a soccer team. There is lots of comedy as they learn to play but eventually the players, and the whole town, regain some self respect.
Good fun for a rainy aftenoon if you have kids 3 - 10. Plus if you are a parent and completely new to the game it will demonstrate the basic rules and tactics involved.

Shaolin Soccer (PG 13) (2003)

From the movie web site:
In the wicked game of "Shaolin Soccer," players will stop at nothing to score a laugh. It fuses ancient martial arts with hard-hitting physical comedy and the high-flying energy of competitive sports. ... When Fung sees Sing take on a bunch of thugs with nothing but a soccer ball, he hatches the brilliant idea of forming a Shaolin soccer team. They set out to recruit Sing's former Shaolin classmates, each has a special power adding to the team's limitless potential. One has a head of iron, another bears stomach muscles able to propel the ball at warp speed, a third weighs 300 pounds but possesses the ability to walk on air, and finally the goalie who can stop any shot. Well, almost any shot.
Looks like the PG-13 rating is mainly to do with Kung Fu style violence.

Escape to Victory (1981) (PG)

Also known as "Victory". This one is an attempt by Hollywood to make a Soccer based movie, and a war movie at the same time! From the movie web site:
Directed by John Huston in 1981 it is set in a Prisoner of War camp during the second world war. Michael Caine stars as Captain John Colby, who leads Sylvester Stallone and an all star cast of footballers including Pele, Bobby Moore, Osvaldo Ardiles, and Mike Summerbee, who agree to play a football match against some local german troops, but after the Nazi propaganda machine takes over they end up in occupied Paris playing the German National team.

The Mean Machine (2001) (Probably PG)

This is an English movie. From the movie web site:
Ex professional soccer player lands in prison on an assault charge and discovers that he is imprisoned with a few inmates who haven't forgiven him for fixing a game... Can he manage to throw a team together in order to get him on side with the guards and also save his neck with his fellow prisoners?...
A remake of the American Football film "The Longest yard" (1974) and again in (~2003) which featured a disgraced Quarterback creating a prisoners' football team and taking on the guards.

Madeline and the Soccer Star (1998)

Part of the Madeline series of cartoons for children. From the movie web site:
Madeline and the girls find adventure on soccer field in this engaging cartoon based on Ludwig Bemelmans' classic stories. Amply entertains small children with appealing characters, colorful animation, delightful story.
Runtime: 25 minutes

Fever Pitch (1999)

Don't get confused by the recent US remake about an obsessed Red Sox Fan. Here we are talking about the UK original, from the same guy who made "About a Boy". Meet Paul, an English teacher in his mid-thirties; a man with an obsession -- football. As the season and the film progresses, his team look certain to end a run of eighteen years without winning the Football Championship. Paul meets Sarah, and they embark on an occasionally stormy relationship. Paul soon discovers that, unlike football, relationships aren't played out in seasons. Their relationship becomes even more enthralling than the nailbiting end to the League Championship, and Sarah comes to understand not only that football can be more than "just a game," but that it has the potential for the kind of heart-stopping dream-come-true moments rarely found in life.
